Display Font

Brief: Design a unique display font.
Category: Typeface Design

The font I designed is based on hand drawn uppercase block letters. I wanted to include illustrated details to make it unique and different from any other block letter fonts. This font is used in context in a website mock-up for a made up candy store.

Process: I began by sketching a variety of letters in different styles to get an idea of what the different forms would look like. Once I was set on using block letters as the base for my design, I sketched them out on grid paper and traced them with a micron pen. Next, I vectorized the letters in Illustrator and printed out a few sheets so I could sketch different patterns in each of the letters. I then filled part of each letter with the same type of pattern and vectorized it in Illustrator. The last step consisted of making it a usable font in Fontographer. As a result of it being my first time creating a font, I did not know how much detail would be taken out. The letters included enough detail to be readable and visually appealing, so I created an OTF file and made it a font.
